LUCID Registration: Step-by-Step Guide
LUCID registration is the compliance step where Amazon suspends your listing fastest if it’s missing. At the same time, it’s one of the easiest steps in the entire FBA setup. You can be done in 30–45 minutes if you know the right order.
What you’ll have after this guide: a valid LUCID registration number, a license agreement with a dual system, and a registered brand link in Amazon Seller Central. That secures your packaging compliance on Amazon.de for 12 months.
What this guide does NOT cover: the strategic question “How do I estimate my packaging quantities?” — that’s covered in detail in the packaging law article.
What You Need Before Starting
Have these ready before you start the application:
- Company name and address — as on the business registration. Foreign companies can register too.
- Tax number and VAT ID — both.
- Brand name(s) — all brands under which you sell on Amazon. No stress: you can add more brands later.
- Estimate of packaging quantities per material and year — cardboard, plastic, composite material, glass, wood, aluminum.
- Email address for communication with the Central Packaging Register Authority.
Step 1: Create a Registration Account
Go to verpackungsregister.org then Login then “Register new.”
You first create an account for yourself or your company. You’ll need:
- Email address
- Password
- First and last name (of the natural person representing the company)
You’ll receive a confirmation email. Confirm the link.
Time required: 3 minutes.
Step 2: Create Company Entry
After login, click “Create master data” then “Manufacturer.”
Enter:
- Company name (exactly as on the business registration)
- Address (street, postal code, city, country)
- Legal form (sole trader, limited company, etc.)
- Tax number — from the German tax office
- VAT ID — from the Federal Central Tax Office (format DE + 9 digits)
- Activity sector — select “First distributor” and “Online trade”
Click “Save.”
Tip: if you don’t have a VAT ID yet, request one first from the Federal Central Tax Office (free, 2–4 weeks). Only then continue with LUCID — otherwise you’ll have to update the entry later.
Time required: 5–10 minutes.
Step 3: Register Brand Names
This is where many beginners make mistakes.
Click “Master data” then “Manage brand names” then “Create new brand name.”
Enter all brand names under which you sell on Amazon:
- If you only sell under one brand: enter that one.
- If you have multiple brands: enter all of them. You can have unlimited brands per company.
- If you sell without your own brand (e.g., reseller model): enter your company name as brand name.
Important: the brand name must exactly match the one on Amazon. Write “Daniks” — not “Daniks GmbH” or “Daniks Cookware.” Amazon compares character by character.
Time required: 2 minutes per brand.
Step 4: Specify Material Types
For each brand, you must declare which material types you place on the market.
Standard materials for Amazon FBA shipping:
- Paper/cardboard: practically always (shipping box, inner box, labels).
- Plastic: usually (poly bags, bubble wrap, tape, inner wrapping).
- Composite packaging: sometimes (coated cardboard, Tetra Pak-style packaging).
- Glass: only for glass products or glass packaging.
- Wood: only for wooden pallets or crates (rare for FBA).
- Aluminum: only for aluminum packaging (rare).
- Ferrous metals: only for metal cans or containers.
Rule of thumb: for 90% of FBA sellers, paper/cardboard and plastic are enough. For the other 10%, additional materials may apply — declare them if so.
Time required: 3 minutes.
Step 5: Note Your LUCID Registration Number
After completing all master data, you’ll receive your LUCID registration number in the format DE + 10 digits (13 characters total).
Store it in a safe place (password manager, compliance folder). You’ll need it:
- For licensing with a dual system
- For entry in Amazon Seller Central
- For authority inquiries
- As compliance proof in case of competitor legal challenges
Time required: 1 minute.
Step 6: License with a Dual System
LUCID registration alone is NOT enough. It’s only the sign-up. For actual compliance, you need a contract with a dual system.
Active providers in 2026 (selection):
- Lizenzero — beginner-friendly online portal (part of Reclay), monthly cancellation.
- Reclay — larger provider, good for scaling volumes.
- Der Grüne Punkt (DSD) — market leader, often cheaper above 2,000+ kg/year.
- Interzero — solid for medium volumes.
- BellandVision, Veolia Umweltservice Dual — alternative providers with similar terms.
My tip for beginners: start with Lizenzero. Online portal, transparent pricing, no phone calls, monthly cancellation period.
Signup process at Lizenzero (similar at other providers):
- Go to
lizenzero.dethen “License now.” - Enter your LUCID registration number. This is the connection.
- Estimate your annual quantities per material in kilograms.
- Choose the contract period (monthly or annual).
- Confirm and pay the license fee via direct debit, credit card, or bank transfer.
How to estimate quantities? From my Daniks experience: an average hard goods product (e.g., a pot) has about 80–150 g of packaging per unit (cardboard + padding + labels). At 1,000 units sold per year, that’s 80–150 kg. At 10,000 units/year: 800–1,500 kg.
If you have no data: estimate conservatively higher. You’ll pay slightly more per kilo, but you avoid a compliance gap. Better to license 200 kg and only put 150 kg on the market than the other way around.
Time required: 10–15 minutes.
Step 7: Enter LUCID Number in Amazon Seller Central
So Amazon knows you’re compliant, you must enter the LUCID number in your seller account.
- Login at
sellercentral.amazon.de. - Top right menu then Performance then Account Health then Compliance Documents.
- Search for “Packaging Law” or “LUCID.”
- Enter your LUCID registration number.
- Save.
Amazon syncs with the LUCID register typically within 24–72 hours. If the entry is correct and all brand names match your Amazon brands, you’ll get a green light in the compliance dashboard.
If Amazon says “LUCID number invalid”, check:
- Brand name match (see Step 3 — exact spelling)
- Material selection (does it cover your actual packaging?)
- Active license with dual system (is the contract effective?)
Time required: 5 minutes.
Step 8: Annual Volume Reporting
This is the only point where LUCID compliance needs ongoing attention.
By May 15 each year, you must report in the LUCID portal how much packaging you actually placed on the market in the previous year. This report must match your license with the dual system.
Workflow:
- Login at
verpackungsregister.org. - “Data reporting” then “Volume report manufacturer” then select the previous year.
- Enter actual quantities per material.
- Confirm.
If actual volume exceeds licensed volume: submit a correction report to the dual system to license the difference. Delays can lead to competitor legal challenges.
Time required: 10 minutes per year.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
-
Brand name mismatch. You register “Daniks GmbH” with LUCID, but your Amazon listing runs under “Daniks.” Amazon sync fails. Fix: exact match.
-
Forgetting a material. You register cardboard but forget plastic (poly bags, films). LUCID spot checks find this. Fix: declare all materials.
-
Estimate too low. You license 100 kg but sell 800 kg. Compliance gap. Fix: correction report to the dual system.
-
Forgetting to cancel old dual system contract. If you switch providers, you must explicitly cancel the old contract — otherwise it keeps running and you pay double. Fix: check old contracts, cancel in writing.
-
LUCID number not entered in Seller Central. Most common reason for unexpected listing suspensions. Fix: enter it in Seller Central immediately after LUCID registration.
What’s Next After This Tutorial?
Once LUCID is done, the next compliance steps are:
- EORI number application — if you import from non-EU countries (China, Turkey)
- Amazon Brand Registry application — for A+ Content and protection against hijackers
- GPSR compliance check (see my GPSR article) — if you’re based outside the EU
